Connections
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead
Mothers Inspiration
My project “Connections” was partially influenced by Margaret Mead’s quotation. Like much of my work, it has also been impacted by my mother’s past. As a daughter of a Yugoslavian woman who survived the Nazi concentration camps, I grew up being aware of the horrific consequences that can occur when people become labelled, then targeted and even persecuted for being “different”.
Community
“Connections” is an exploration of the broad meanings of community, diversity, acceptance, and relationships. Unencumbered by narrower definitions of community, this work expresses my lifelong philosophy that the true global community encompasses the Earth, its life sustaining elements of Air, Water, and all its citizens. Informed by a narrative that references ideas of compassion, empathy, inclusion, acceptance, support, and healing, “Connections” investigates a wide range of current topics and events. On occasion it speaks for our environment and species whose voices we cannot or do not want to hear. Through these drawings I have endeavored to expresses my lifelong belief that all living organisms are on some level connected.
My Process
Frequently project driven, my art transforms to embrace the materials and topics being explored. I am consumed by the process of creating. Unexpected results from juxtapositions of form and image, object, and material, engage me in unpredictable, exciting activity where anything could happen. Generated with a broad spectrum of mediums, interconnected images and forms, this work echoes the complexity of relationships, humankind, life, and human impact.
Always intrigued by the enigma of the human condition, I am drawn into exploring the myriads of wonderful possibilities inherent in these two words. Unpredictable and ever changing, humanity provides the visual and thematic thread that connects my creative process and work. Visual elements move the work beyond historical, geographic, or cultural restraints to articulate aspects of the universal human experience. This concept is supported by the inclusion of a generic human silhouette. Freed from the constraints of resemblance, to those real or imagined, the human figure transforms to become a universal symbol for Every man, every woman, and every person.
