Metaphysical Love
Informed by reality and dreams, times past and present, as well as other art forms, my work deals with life’s journey. Additionally, much of my art has been informed by cognizance about the dichotomy of human nature. This awareness has also fostered my fascination with, and exploration of, the ever-changing human condition.
The experience of viewing Richard Wagner’s sublime opera Tristan and Isolde seduced me into exploring the concepts of a metaphysical love. Woven into this work is the idea that for some, love is mystical. It is a union able to rise above earthly concerns and passions to become an energy that not only transcends death but finds ultimate fulfillment when released from this earth’s physical restraints. Although the protagonists in some pieces may be portrayed with contemporary signifiers, the remaining visual elements move the work beyond historical, geographical, or cultural constraints.
Complexity of Viewing
The unexpected result of an accidentally discovered original printing technique, the grid goes beyond an allusion to the mosaic. Simultaneously referencing the historical notions and pointillism of Seurat, and today’s contemporary digital world, the tiny forms do more than create the illusion of colour, value, and form. The squares evolve into paradoxical visual elements that concurrently, define and dissolve the images. Inherent in the ebb and flow of image is the potential for metaphysical expression. My art, with its complexity of techniques, provides an aesthetic and intellectual experience that expands upon each viewing.
